We are off to a good start this year! We are having fun getting to know our new friends and deepening our relationship with our returning students. This month is primarily focusing on ground rules, classroom culture and getting to know one another. Our older students took their cues nicely and are being wonderful helpers and mentors to our newest additions!
These next couple of months we’ll be talking about feelings, emotions, our family and getting to know one another. We will introduce the concept of Living and Non-Living as well as the letters S, M and T. At Starlight, we emphasize the sound of the letter, rather than the name so that it is phonetic and easier to transition into reading. In October, we’ll introduce Australia, Reptiles, Amphibians, the letters A, P and F, the difference between plants and animals and offer our first Parent Education Night on October 17th at 6:30 pm. The presenter is Jasmine Norris and the topic is “Your Child’s Nutrition as it relates to Montessori”.
Thank you to all who came to Parent Orientation and our Picnic. I hope you found it helpful and had an opportunity to meet other parents. For those who couldn’t make it, we have a new student intern. His name is Chris Rasmussen. He is currently completing his Montessori training at St. Mary’s College in Moraga. I hope you all have an opportunity to meet him soon.
The following are important dates and events and reminders. Please make a note of all of them:
September 21st International Day of Peace – On this day, all children are invited. However, if it is not your child’s regular day or time, please accompany her/him for the portion of the morning that we will be observing this event. We ask that, if possible, dress your child in white and have them bring one flower to add to our classroom bouquet, representing the fact that we each can bring something beautiful to add in making our world more peaceful. We will be singing a Peace song which will be sung by all Montessori children around the world in a 24 hour period. We will also be doing some Peace-related crafts and talking about what Peace is and how we can contribute to it.
October 4th Sukkot presentation by Kara’s family – On this day, we will learn about a Jewish holiday called Sukkot. We’ve been fortunate these past few years to have these and other presentations by the Brodie family to help us learn more about these traditions. This will be primarily for the children.
October 11th Field Trip to Smith Family Farms – On this day, we will all meet at the farm ( 4430 Sellars Ave Brentwood) by 9:30 am to spend the morning and lunch time together. This is a fabulous place for a Pumpkin Patch field trip. There is much to see and enjoy, including a Hoe-Down!! It is $10 per person, including young siblings. You may make the check out to “Starlight Montessori Preschool”. Please let us know how many of you will be going by October 6th. Once all the money is collected, the school will write one check to the Farm. Please bring a bag lunch for yourself and your child. There are picnic tables there. There was a paper sent home in your child’s cubby with guidelines and a description of what your entrance fee gets you.
October 18th Firefighter/Truck Visit – On this day, our local fire fighters will visit the school and bring their truck for the children to see and explore. They will be arriving at 10 am. All children are invited. Ones who don’t normally come on a Wednesday morning are welcome to come for the presentation as long as they are accompanied by a parent or caregiver for the duration.
Halloween – Starlight School does not do any parades or encourage wearing costumes for this day. We talk about it with the children and share in their excitement about the day and alleviate any fears or anxieties they might have about it. You can be creative if this is your snack day. Please remember our rules of “low-sugar, low-fat and low mess” when providing special snacks. Remember, there is no school the day after Halloween on November 1st. It is a Staff Work Day.
Soccer at Starlight! We have an opportunity to offer soccer for our students through Soccer Shots. There is some information that is attached to this email. The classes will be once a week for half an hour, most likely midday around 11:30 or noon out on the baseball field across the street from Starlight. Please let us know if you are interested. If enough are, we will officially begin this fall.
Please send your child to school in closed-toe shoes. Please no flip-flops or cowboy boots.
Please label all your child’s jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts. I realize this might be a bit laborious but we would really appreciate you taking the time to do this since we have great difficulty almost every day determining whose articles of clothing belong to whom. We also end up donating a great deal of jackets and sweaters at the end of the year. Thank you very much!
Below, please find the September/October Snack and Sharing Calendar as well as the School roster. Please bring enough snack for 15 children, either fruits or vegetables or both. We provide healthy crackers and we serve water. Your child’s sharing item can be something from nature, something they made with their own hands, a favorite book or photo or something related to our theme of study. Please leave toys at home. If they are bringing in a book, please help your child put a bookmark in their favorite page so that they can open right to it when talking about their book. Thank you! Looking forward to a great year with all of you!!
