Starlight Montessori School’s preschool program is for children ages 3 to 6. Our children begin the day with outdoor time on the playground, allowing opportunities for whole body movement and constructive, imaginative play.
After playtime, we organize our outside materials, tidy up our play yard, and head indoors. Children hang up their coats independently, wash their hands, and settle in for circle time.
Children have circle time for 15-20 minutes. Circle time includes morning rituals such as a greeting song, taking note of our calendar, observing the weather (complete with a student meteorologist giving a daily “weather report”), introducing new academic and art lessons, and language lessons in Spanish and Farsi.
Children then have a two hour work period during which they are free to roam about the classroom choosing their own activities, or “works”, as they are called. The children are free to work by themselves, with a friend, or with a teacher. When they hear the chimes, they start to clean up and put away their work and come to a second (brief) circle for music and/or stories.
Once a week, they also have a formal yoga class. Sometimes there might be a special guest doing a presentation of some kind (dentist, musician, artist, cultural presentation).
They are then dismissed for lunch or pick up. Morning children are picked up at noon, full day children have lunch and afternoon children arrive at 12:30 where the same schedule is repeated.
